Original drawing - A4 on Arches paper, natural pigment watercolour and pencil
The original drawing was inspired by the idea that trees living beside each other will form reciprocal relationships. I live near two beautiful hawthorns which are pink in flower. I wanted to represent this colour and tree of the heart.
We know that trees form close relationships, this has been well documented by the research of Suzanne Simard and other scientists. They swap sugars and nutrients through their roots and the vast underground mycorrhizal network. If one tree is attacked by insects it will alert the other tree through electromagnetic signals so it will have time to send out pheromones to ward off the attack. A tree shares its own resources with its partner knowing that in time it will be reciprocated.
We can’t see the shared roots and mycorrhizal networks shared by trees but we know they are there. It mirrors human relationships, as we care for another person with unseen webs of interconnected emotions and love, we know that we too will be looked after by the shared bongs of friendship and invisible tangled roots.
Hawthorn is used in herbal medicine in connection with the heart. It is used as a flower essence to open the heart to love oneself and others.
