“Good evening my child, and what brings you to the foot of my tree?” the forest-witch hooted.
A warm wind ruffled Ellie’s fur and whispered something in her ear.
“Ask”, it seemed to say.
“Everyone says you're a witch and that you can change things,” Ellie stammered over the lump in her throat. The wind blew soothingly on her face.
“We all have the power to change our situations, my dear child,” the owl replied.
“But I can't change mine,” Ellie said, bursting into tears. “I need your help. Please! I need to turn back into a human. I failed as a fox. Do you do that? Is it even possible?”
“There, there, child, there is no such thing as failure. There are only new learnings.” the owl said gently. “Your predicament is indeed a matter for a wise and exceptionally gifted witch such as I. Everything can be fixed, sometimes it’s just a matter of finding the right being to help. And a sprinkle of trust. Now hold tight!”
“You are going to do it now?” Ellie cried.
“Well, yes, the moon is in the perfectly aligned to the correct stars and the universe has just expanded enough to allow for a spot of magic. And I can sense that something has shifted in you too…”
“But I will miss Felix,” Ellie blurted out. “I haven't said goodbye”.
“There is no need for that”, the owl hooted. “Trust in all you have learnt on your journey as a fox and that there has been a reason for your adventure. It may transpire that you will be the only human in history to speak fluent fox.” And with that she waved her wing and hooted something that sounded ancient and hypnotic.
